How to remove mould and care for your Sofabed Mattress

A persistent aftermath of one of the wettest years on record has left households battling serious mould and mildew problems. Mould can be found everywhere, especially in visible places, but one spot that you may be overlooking is tucked away in your sofa bed. ⁠

Checking Your Sofabed for Mould⁠

Now is the time to check your sofa bed! If you do find mould growing on either the sofa bed mattress or the trampoline base, here are steps you can try to remove the mould.

Step 1: Brush Off Visible Mould⁠

Take the mattress outdoors on a dry, non-humid day. Brush off all visible mould on the surface using a dry scrub brush or broom.

Step 2: Vacuuming the Mattress and Trampoline Base

Vacuum both sides of the mattress and trampoline base thoroughly using an upholstery brush attachment. Leave the mattress and trampoline base out for several hours to air out.

Step 3: Cleaning the Mould Stains

Prepare the cleaning solution:

• Mix equal parts of rubbing alcohol and warm water in a bucket.
• Dip a clean cloth or sponge into the cleaning solution and scrub any mould stains that remain in a circular motion.

Step 4: Rinsing with Warm Water

With a new cloth, dip it in warm water and wring it out (make sure it’s not too wet), rinse the area that has been cleaned with the rubbing alcohol cleaning solution.

Step 5: Disinfecting and Drying the Mattress

Spray the mattress with an upholstery disinfectant. Place the mattress out in the sun to air dry; sunshine helps prevent additional mould growth. Alternatively, allow the trampoline base to air-dry in a well-ventilated, dry room with plenty of daylight.

Preventing Mould Growth

An effective way to prevent mould is to keep a dry home by regularly opening up the windows for fresh air. You may also need to get a dehumidifier to avoid the growth of mould by preventing the build-up of dampness.
